What to do if I have knocked my tooth out?

If addressed in a timely manner, a tooth that has been knocked out may be replanted and become functional again. Following these instructions to minimise damage and contamination can increase this likelihood.

  • Locate the missing tooth, picking it up by the chewing surface of the tooth and avoiding contact with the root surface.
  • Rinse it gently with water to remove any debris. Avoid scrubbing or using soap and chemicals.
  • Try to insert the tooth back into its socket again if possible and gently bite to hold it in place. If you are unable to reinsert the tooth, try to keep it moist by holding it in your mouth or storing it in milk. Water is not suitable for this purpose.
  • Try to see a dentist within 30 minutes of the injury.
