Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the colour of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.

Having white teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients. Basically there are two main ways to whiten teeth, one is Take-home whitening system and the other is In-chair whitening system.

Take-home whitening is more common in people who prefer the comfort and privacy of their home to achieve the desired results. In-chair whitening consists of high-strength whitening gels that is activated by a high energy light source under the supervision of your dentist. Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to consider replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. In-chair whitening involves replacement of any restorations that are being done after bleaching so as to match with the newly bleached teeth.

In-chair whitening may achieve up to eight shades lighter in a 90-minute treatment session. Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch up may be needed after a year or so, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.

Reasons for tooth whitening:

  • Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development)
  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer
  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.)
  • Yellow, brown stained teeth

Take home whitening can be done in one visit. Firstly, impressions (moulds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom clear plastic trays.

Then patient will be asked to try on the trays for proper fit, and adjustments will be made if necessary. The trays are worn with special whitening solution for specific duration, depending on the degree of staining and desired level of whitening. It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching.

At gentledentistry, two in chair whitening procedures, BriteSmile teeth whitening and Zoom teeth whitening are offered to make your smile naturally beautiful.

BriteSmile teeth whitening system

The procedure is simple, safe and effective employing a unique blue light in conjunction with whitening gel to speed up the lightening process. Firstly, the dentist will examine your teeth and gums for required oral health essential, before performing the procedure. Next, whitening gel is applied on your teeth, followed by the blue light focused on your teeth to activate the gel that finally restores the natural whiteness of your teeth.

BriteSmile procedure helps to maintain your new smile for approximately 1-2 years. The procedure seems to be effective even for people suffering from severe tooth discolouration and is considered ideal for young adults with heavy staining as a result of wearing braces.

The procedure is not recommended during pregnancy or nursing, or during orthodontic or dental treatment.

Zoom teeth whitening system

Zoom employs peroxide gel and zoom light for whitening your teeth. Firstly, the teeth and gums are covered for protection, before applying the whitening gel. Then hydrogen peroxide gel of specific concentration is applied to the teeth and is sequentially exposed with zoom light to dispel stains and lighten the teeth.

Few adverse effects may occur due to the heat of zoom light, such as tingling, tooth sensitivity and discomfort. Therefore, after the completion of the procedure, a sensitivity reducing gel is applied.

Follow all the care instructions for your teeth and trays, as given by your dentist and visit your dentist regularly to help maintain a beautiful, healthy, white smile.
